Easy Kindle Cover

4

I have had a Sony eReader for years & absolutely loved going on trips and sitting in waiting rooms knowing I had over twenty books at my fingertips, waiting to enjoy. Recently (before our trip to St. John, of course) my Sony died forever, out of warranty, D-E-A-D. It would cost more to replace the battery or pay for repairs than buying a new eReader, so I said forget it.

Because we are closing on the house soon, we've cut our "fun" spending to a minimum. I can score free books from friends & family members, so I decided a new eReader wasn't in the cards for me.

I signed up for a library card this week for the first time in years, excited that I now have an unlimited number of books a short drive away for free. While we were getting our cards, Bill kept mentioning that I should learn how the library handles Kindle book check-outs. I tried to push it off and he insisted I learn how it works, just so I don't have to come back if & when I get a Kindle.

This weekend I'm a bachelorette as Bill rides 150 miles on his bike for the MS 150 Tour De Farms. Knowing I'd be lonely all weekend, I planned on crafting & reading & just spending time quietly since my obligation of packing has been put on hold. Last night after work I came home to a brand new Kindle, still in the box with all the shiny wrapping on it :) BEST. HUSBAND. EVER. Major points, Bill.

Which brings us to today – craft day with my mom! I brought a bunch of materials to start a new project & left my sewing machine at home, thinking I would be too busy with my hands-on craft project to think of sewing. After staring at my craft supplies for over an hour, I realized today I just needed to sew!!

She and I worked together most of the afternoon to come up with a pattern & after one prototype, I had the Kindle cover of my dreams finished! Once we had the pattern perfected it took less than an hour to sew start to finish. (The cutting/pinning is the time consuming part) Check it out!

Happy Little Kindle Cover!

Here's how you make it, step by step: (Using scraps for this would be perfect - no piece in the pattern exceeds 9" x 12")
  1. Cut 2 pieces of fabric 9" x 12" - One for outside fabric, one for lining. Be very exact in your cutting. The Kindle fits perfectly at this size. 1/4" smaller and you have a fancy garbage bag :)
  2. If you want a pocket, cut a third piece 9" x 12" & press hot-dog style - resulting in 4.5" x 12"
  3. Cut 2 pieces of batting 8" x 11" & one piece 3.5" x 11"
  4. Cut a piece of bias tape 3" long for button loop.
  5. Measuring 3" from the edge, loop bias tape & pin in place.
  6. Sew 12" sides of outside & lining right sides together.
  7. Reverse and press seam
  8. Wrong sides together with batting in between, pin to secure & quilt main cover body (outside fabric & inside fabric) & pocket fabric - these two pieces should not be sewn together yet.
  9. Pin pocket piece to outside fabric side - pressed seam as the top - to the bottom edge of the fabric - this is the side WITHOUT the button loop. Button loop is top of pattern.
  10. Flip so lining fabric is facing out & pin all edges together. You will have two seams to sew - one side & the bottom edge (edge WITHOUT button loop)
  11. Sew with 1/4" seam allowance down side & across bottom of bag - assure pocket is in place and fabrics remain flat while sewing.
  12. Flip inside out & press.
  13. Sew on button.
Couldn't be easier! If you have questions or this pattern doesn't make sense, please email me & I'll reevaluate so it's easier for others to understand. We all learn differently!

Oh, and Mason wanted to tell everyone that he loves reading too. What summer books & projects are you enjoying right now?
