Must-Know Monday: Garden Planning

0

This year Hubs and I are going to have our first real garden!! Last year at the condo we planted a small area with tomatoes, carrots and beans, but since we moved in July we didn't get to finish out the season with any real "crops".

We have been planning to have a garden and grow our own produce for years, so having our own home with a perfect yard for a garden is a real dream come true!

Hubs found a great infographic to help us plan when we should plant each type of produce we want to grow.
From the guidance of this chart, we have decided to plant in four batches.

40º Celery
Peas
Carrots
Herbs
50º Tomatoes
Asparagus
60º Snap Beans
Peppers
Cucumbers
Squash
Eggplant
Watermelon
Pumpkin
70º Brussel Sprouts
Jalapeno Peppers

We are going to try the egg shell starter method to start all of our seeds, as it seems to be the best way to determine the "keepers" – this way we aren't popping seeds into the ground, hoping and praying they germinate only to be disappointed that we planted a patch of duds.

I am too impatient; I love instant gratification! If we can know overnight that the seeds we are planting are going to pop, I am a very happy camper!

Check out this great video if you aren't familiar with the egg shell method to start seeds:

I can't wait to get our garden started in a few weeks, then have lots of delicious produce we grew ourselves to enjoy all summer long! The cost savings will be tremendous since we buy lots of produce, but the satisfaction of growing our own food is what I'm looking forward to most!

Happy growing!!
