Grocery Challenge 2012: Update 5

0

Welp, the soup was a big@$$ flop. Last night when we went to eat it in the 10 min Bill had from one appointment to the next, I opened up the pot of simmering, good-smelling yumminess to find that the beans and peas weren't cooked yet. Hmm...they'd been in liquid for 24 hours at this point, so that's annoying.

Bill set the pot to boil and turned on his heels to get to his next appointment while I stuffed some spring rolls in the convection for something to eat myself. I settled on the couch with a fork & a pan of S'mores Bars, fresh out of the oven - which at that point were more like "hot pile of s'm....yum" and munched while I cried to "So You Think You Can Dance" (man, that show really gets me). Somewhere around 30 minutes later I realize my spring rolls never beeped, so I get up to look at them (1/3 of the 9x9 pan of S'mores Bars gone) and realize my little spring rolls beeped around 15 minutes ago and now they had a thick shell of DRIED CRUNCH to them.

I poured the little sac of dipping sauce into a cup and piled all 12 remaining spring rolls onto a plate. Back to the couch, to continue sobbing at SYTYCD. One bite into the first spring roll and I taste it....freezer burn. The bag must have been opened and I was so hungry I hadn't noticed while I was tearing out the little nuggets of veggie and wonton. Thank GOODNESS I'd eaten a giant pile of delicious-sugary-buttery-I-can-feel-my-face-getting-fatter-by-the-second bars. I wasn't that hungry after all.

I was 3 hours into my 4 hour SYTYCD DVR Special when Bill got home. Then, I remembered....the soup. For 3 hours that soup sat BOILING away, ground meat plastered to the bottom of our "Super Pot". Blackened to a fine crisp. Bill tried to salvage it while I sulked on the couch in a puddle of my own tears. He reassured me it wasn't a big deal, all of the ingredients were probably free anyway & life goes on. When I felt okay about it he then threw in "We'll just eat it tomorrow night." *eyebrow raise*

So, tonight, we did. And it wasn't terrible....Well. Yeah. It was basically terrible. The peas & beans DID finally cook, after all. But the soup itself was a burnt, salty, disgusting mess. I had maybe 10 bites.

Since I polished off another enormous pile of s'mores bars between lunch and as my appetizer tonight, I let Bill eat the rest for dessert. I'll probably start snacking on fruit flavored ice-pops after I write this post.

I cannot wait to cook real food again. The more sloppy food we eat, the sloppier of a human I feel. I fear we're reaching rock-bottom...

I cannot wait to cook real food again.
